Bed Bug Heat Treatment – Complete Eradication in a Single Day

When it comes to eliminating bed bugs, heat treatment is the most effective and reliable method available. Bed bugs cannot survive sustained exposure to the correct levels of heat — it reaches every corner, crack, and crevice of your property, ensuring total eradication.

Why Choose Heat Treatment?

Our non-toxic heat treatment is:

  • Safe for buildings, furniture, wood, fabrics, and personal belongings
  • Harmless to humans and pets
  • Environmentally friendly and chemical-free

Why Not Gas, Steam, or Electric?

We do not recommend gas or steam treatments as they introduce moisture — and drying the bugs out is a vital part of the extermination process.
Likewise, electric heaters simply cannot generate or sustain the high temperatures required to kill bed bugs effectively.

Our Advanced Heat System

We use powerful indirect diesel heaters (81kW / 276,000 BTU/hr with an airflow of 3,300 m³/h). These units stay safely outside your property, venting fumes externally while clean, hot air is ducted inside through a window or door.
There are no naked flames, and we continuously monitor the temperature to eliminate cold spots. Fans ensure even heat distribution throughout the room.

Proven Results

Our target temperature is:

  • 50°C for 2 hours or
  • 52°C for 1 hour

However, we typically reach 60°C+ for several hours, guaranteeing that all life stages of bed bugs — including eggs — are completely destroyed.

Heat penetrates deeply into every surface and material, providing a thorough, one-day solution to your bed bug problem.

Why Heat Treatment Works When Other Methods Fail

When any treatment begins, bed bugs instinctively scatter, hiding deep in cracks, crevices, and hard-to-reach areas. That’s why it’s essential to treat the entire room — not just the bed.

The Power of Heat

Unlike sprays or steaming, heat reaches everywhere — behind walls, inside furniture, under carpets, and even within electrical sockets. It not only penetrates these hidden spaces but also draws bed bugs out of their hiding spots, ensuring complete eradication.

Why Chemicals and Steam Fail

  • Resistance to Insecticides: Bed bugs have developed strong resistance to many chemical treatments, including professional-grade products.
  • Steam Limitations: Steaming only works on direct contact — if the bugs aren’t hit, they survive.
  • Bed Bug Bombs: These may seem convenient, but they actually drive bed bugs into new hiding places, spreading the infestation further.

The Proven Solution

Many of our clients come to us after traditional pest control methods have failed. Our professional heat treatment eliminates all bed bugs — including eggs — in a single visit, giving you long-lasting peace of mind.

Bed Bug Heat Treatment Cost in Essex

The cost of bed bug heat treatment in London depends on:

  • Size of the property

  • Number of rooms affected

  • Severity of the infestation

While heat treatment may cost more upfront than sprays, it is more cost-effective long-term, as repeat treatments are rarely needed.

Heat Treatment FAQ

Yes it does. Hot air will have to be pumped into a room. Same day results. We specialise in this
Unloading and loading the van of equipment seems like a marathon. It is very physical work as we have to be exposed to the heat when checking the rooms. The equipment is expensive and we use diesel to run it. Mothkill will beat genuine quotes! We are amongst some of the cheapest in the UK
The price is dependant on how many areas or rooms need treating. We will always try to provide the best quote
Moths, Beetle, Fleas, bed bugs and more
Insect eggs, larvae, pupae and adults are all killed reliably when they are raised to a temperature (at least 49°C) where their protective external coating breaks down and their basic protein structure denatures – essentially, they are 'cooked' (and also dehydrated)
It is safe for most materials, although we recommend electronics, wax items, makeup, aerosols, flammable items, fragile items like fine art are removed. Full list provided prior to arrival or on the web page.
Yes it can weaken the glue and therefore could cause bubbles and curling. I have done many heat treatments with wallpaper and it has been ok.
Our heater stays outside. No naked flames and only hot air is pumped in.
No it's really non invasive. We run the ducting through the window. The door of the room being treated is closed. The diesel heater stays outside and is not loud
In that unlikely event we would re-treat free of charge - please note that your property must be prepared prior to arrival or we cannot offer a guarantee.. See questions on bed bugs and moths.
We do this all the time and your building and items will be safe. Some items are removed from the room. We monitor the treatment all the time.
We recommend vacating whilst treatment is under way. It gets hot and pipes are hot. If any insecticides are used then the property must be empty of people and animals.
No. Fumes are vented outside. We use indirect diesel heaters that stay outside and clean hot air in ducted inside via a window or door. No smell.
All properties must have parking and an area to site our diesel heater outside. If you live in a flat please check with us for suitability.
Electronics: Mobile phones, video game consoles, TVs, computers, alarm clocks, radio sets, speakers, and other items containing electronic processors. Flammable items: Aerosol cans, pressurized containers, lighters, flammable chemicals. Medications and Cosmetics: Prescription and over-the-counter medications, makeup, perfumes, and other cosmetics. Wax products: Candles, waxwork, oil paintings, and other wax-based items. Food: Fresh food, food that melts, alcoholic drinks. Plants and pets: Any living organisms should be moved to a safe, cooler location. Delicate materials: Vinyl records, photo negatives, film strips, and some types of wallpaper, linoleum tile, and laminated furniture. Musical instruments: Musical instruments, especially pianos, may require tuning after heat treatment. Antiques & Pictures: Delicate antiques, paintings, pictures, family heirlooms, mirrors, fine china and porcelain, old books. Loose Papers & Breakable Items: Box up loose papers and breakable items. Plastic: Remove plastic blinds, curtain rails, picture frames, mouldings, decorative items, shelves and any plastic item that might distort. Laminated Furniture: Must be removed as it might peel. Anything Glued: Heat will melt glue. Shoes: Are normally glued so please remove.
All items that cannot take the heat must be removed to a safe place. The room must be decluttered and clothing washed and stored in containers. Unwashed clothing must also be isolated in containers or sealed bags. Anything removed from the room must be thoroughly inspected for infestation. Beds need to be stripped and if possible taken apart. Wardrobes, cupboards and drawers emptied. Sofas must be stripped of cushions and seats and the base taken apart if applicable. Thoroughly vacuum and dispose of rubbish in outside bins. Less is more in the room as heat needs to permeate and penetrate the surfaces.
It's always a good idea, especially with bed bugs, to remove clothing. Put clothing in sealed containers and/or sealed bags. Label the container or bag treated or untreated. To treat clothing wash at 60+, dry clean, freeze for 2 weeks or put in tumble dryer on high heat for 30 minutes. The method depends on the type of fabric. Always check label first. All these methods will kill larvae and bed bugs.
Yes it can fail if preparations are not made prior to treatment. It is your responsibility to remove clothing and belongings that could be infected. Always use sealed bags or containers, even if not treated. Mark as treated or not treated. Remove clutter, vacuum and clean thoroughly. Floors must be as clear as possible. Furniture can normally stay.
If the paintwork is poorly done or old then it is possible it might bubble or peel. Good quality paintwork is normally stable.
Yes they can tolerate high heat. We protect where necessary.
We offer 6 months warranty if the entire property is heated. The property has to be in a tidy state. We cannot offer warranty on single rooms as other parts of the property could be infected.

Bed Bugs FAQ

Bed bugs are notoriously tough little insects. They feed at night and hide during the daytime. As they are very small they hide in the smallest of cracks and crevices, seams of mattresses. They can survive for periods without feeding. The are resistant to many insecticides
They cause extreme discomfort to humans. They can cause mental health issues due to a nasty rash and pain. They are not known to transmit diseases
We only treat by heat as insecticide is not always effective. If you choose insecticide then at least 2-3 treatments is necessary. Heat treatment is very effective
You can do a lot. Seal all cracks and crevices. Once your mattress has been treated encapsulate it or get a new one. Do not clutter your room or store items under the bed. Clean and declutter so bed bugs cannot hide. Vacuum regularly including under the bed and anything on the floor. Wash bedding regularly on a 60 degrees or more. Wash clothing regularly or treat. Search for the source. It will be somewhere. Get professional help
If bed bugs are resistant to professional insecticide then DIY products, that are much much weaker, will normally fail. Save your money. The websites will say they are the best thing since sliced bread. It's only natural to try yourself but honestly you will probably fail
You certainly can. They hitch a ride on your clothes and suitcase. Do not store a suitcase on the floor. Use a stand. Hang your clothes up or leave in the suitcase. Encapsulate your case in a large sealed bag.
Be careful. Never buy a used mattress! Treat anything used before it enters your property
This can happen so I like to also treat the room, after heat, with silica gel dust, insecticide and you should isolate the bed with bed bug interceptors, that go under the feet. It stops them climbing up.
Bed bugs are transported by people on trains, plains, buses, hotels, just to name a few! They will hitch a ride and then infect your premises. They are a problem worldwide.
NO! Its nothing to do with hygiene. Clean or dirty they do not care. A clean house makes spotting and treating bed bugs easier.
If your room or rooms are not prepared correctly the treatment can fail! It's time to declutter. 1. Remove all clothing in sealed bags and treat. Anything you remove that is not sealed can infect other parts of the property. 2. Declutter room. 3. Any boxes that are not sealed need sorting and removing. Buy sealed containers. 4. Remove all bedding and treat. 5. Thoroughly clean and vacuum room. Dispose of vacuum bags in sealed bags. 6. Bags and hand bags need sealing and removing. 7. Electronics can house bed bugs. Seal and remove. 8. Empty any cupboards and cabinets and isolate the belongings in sealed bags. Failure to do the above will hinder the heat treatment and therefore we can refuse to carry out the work and there will be a charge. If we have to heat treat an unprepared room then the guarantee will be void.
It is possible that 1 heat treatment might not be enough. We can advise on the day. Bed bugs normally require a combination of treatments and processes as they can hide where even heat will not penetrate. The heat will either kill all or most of them and then other treatments take care of the rest.
"Zombie bed bugs" is an informal term for bed bugs that survive treatment but are no longer a threat because they are too damaged to bite or reproduce. These bugs may still move, leading to panic, but they are essentially a "zombie" state—alive but not actively reproducing or feeding. This phenomenon can occur when treatments like heat, chemicals, or freezing fail to kill them completely. They will die!
If you have bare floorboards with gaps then bed bugs can get under the floor and heat may not kill them.
