Why Heat Monitoring Matters

Professional heat treatment uses industrial heating equipment and circulation fans to distribute heat. Technicians monitor temperatures and assess whether heat is reaching the places where pests may be hiding. Room-air readings alone cannot confirm successful treatment.

This simulator is educational. Readings are fictional and do not represent a live treatment, guaranteed pest mortality or a validated treatment schedule.

How We Treat Bed Bugs With Heat

Bed bugs can hide deep inside beds, furniture, cracks and other difficult-to-reach areas. Our professional heat treatment combines controlled heating, powerful air circulation and temperature monitoring throughout the treatment area.

1

Inspection & Setup

We assess the treatment area, access, furniture and potential bed bug harbourages before positioning our equipment.

2

Controlled Heating

Our professional heating equipment gradually raises temperatures throughout the treatment area.

3

Air Circulation

Powerful fans move heated air around beds, furniture and other areas where bed bugs may be hiding.

4

Temperature Monitoring

Multiple sensors help us identify cooler areas that may require additional heat or airflow.

Heat Has to Reach Where Bed Bugs Hide

The objective is not simply to make the room hot. Bed bugs can shelter in mattress seams, bed frames, furniture joints, skirting boards, cracks and other protected locations.

Effective heat treatment therefore depends on temperature, exposure time, airflow and ensuring that heat reaches potential harbourages throughout the treatment area.

🌡️

Multiple Temperature Sensors

We monitor conditions at different points rather than relying solely on the temperature beside the heater.

Why Heat Treatment Can Be So Effective

Bed bugs are difficult pests because they hide extremely well. Professional heat offers several advantages when treatment is correctly prepared, distributed and monitored.

🥚

Targets Different Life Stages

Sufficient heat can kill bed bug eggs, nymphs and adult bed bugs.

🔥

Reaches Hidden Areas

Heated air can circulate around furniture and into many areas that are difficult to treat individually.

🌡️

Monitored Treatment

Multiple sensors allow us to monitor conditions and identify areas requiring additional heat or airflow.

🧪

Reduced Reliance on Insecticides

Heat can control bed bugs without relying solely on surface-applied insecticides.

Why Bed Bug Treatments Sometimes Fail

No responsible pest treatment should be described as incapable of failure. Bed bugs are exceptionally good at hiding, and successful control depends on reaching the infestation rather than simply treating the obvious areas.

Missed Harbourages

Bed bugs may be hidden inside furniture, cracks, floor gaps or other difficult locations.

Poor Preparation

Heavy clutter or tightly packed belongings can restrict airflow and create insulated areas.

Untreated Areas

Bed bugs elsewhere in the property can later move back into areas that have already been treated.

Temperature Distribution

Cooler areas may require additional heat, airflow or repositioning of equipment.

Insecticide Resistance

Some bed bug populations have developed resistance to commonly used insecticides.

Reinfestation

Luggage, visitors, furniture or adjoining properties can introduce bed bugs again after treatment.

🔥

Indirect Heating Equipment

Our indirect diesel heater remains outside the property. Combustion gases are exhausted outdoors while clean heated air is ducted into the treatment area.

📊

We Monitor the Treatment

Temperature sensors positioned around the treatment area help us monitor heat distribution and identify cooler locations that need attention.

What Happens on Treatment Day?

Treatment is carefully set up and monitored rather than simply turning on a heater and waiting.

🏠

We Set Up the Property

Equipment, ducting, fans and temperature sensors are positioned around the treatment area.

🔥

We Heat & Monitor

Temperatures rise gradually while we monitor conditions and adjust airflow where necessary.

✓

Treatment Is Completed

Once the treatment process is complete, we allow conditions to reduce and advise you when it is appropriate to return.

How Bed Bug Heat Treatment Works

How professional heat reaches bed bugs and their hiding places.

Heat Treatment & Bed Bug Eggs

Does bed bug heat treatment work?

Yes. Professional bed bug heat treatment can be highly effective because sufficiently high temperatures can kill adult bed bugs, nymphs and eggs.

Unlike a surface treatment, heated air can circulate around furniture and into many cracks, crevices and harbourages where bed bugs hide.

At MothKill, we use professional heating equipment, air-moving fans and multiple temperature sensors to monitor treatment and identify areas that need additional heat or airflow.

How does bed bug heat treatment work?

Bed bugs are vulnerable to sustained high temperatures. Professional equipment gradually raises temperatures throughout the treatment area while powerful fans circulate heated air.

We position temperature sensors in different areas of the property. Therefore, we do not rely simply on the temperature beside the heater.

The objective is to achieve lethal conditions in the places where bed bugs are likely to be hiding.

Does heat treatment kill bed bug eggs?

Yes. This is one of the major advantages of heat treatment. When sufficiently high temperatures reach the insects and remain there for long enough, heat can kill bed bug eggs, nymphs and adult bed bugs.

Bed bug eggs can be difficult to control with some conventional treatments. As a result, heat treatment can be particularly useful for established infestations.

Heat Has to Reach the Hiding Places

A hot room alone is not enough. Bed bugs can shelter in furniture joints, bed frames, cracks, skirting boards and other protected areas. Air circulation and temperature monitoring help us identify cooler areas during treatment.

HEAT + AIRFLOW Temperature monitoring throughout the treatment area

Cost & Other Insects

Why is bed bug heat treatment more expensive than spraying?

Professional heat treatment requires specialist heaters, ducting, powerful fans, temperature-monitoring equipment, fuel and considerable time on site.

The equipment also has to be transported, unloaded, installed, monitored and removed after treatment.

Although heat treatment can cost more initially than a single insecticide treatment, conventional bed bug treatment may require multiple visits. We aim to keep our prices competitive and will consider genuine comparable quotations.

How much does bed bug heat treatment cost?

Cost depends on the size and layout of the property, the number of rooms requiring treatment, location, access and the complexity of the infestation.

For an accurate quotation, contact MothKill with your postcode, property size and details of where you have found bed bug activity.

What insects can be treated with heat?

Professional pest heat treatment can be effective against several insects, including bed bugs, clothes moths, carpet beetles and fleas.

However, the treatment method and temperatures required can vary depending on the pest and property.

🏠

Preparing for Bed Bug Heat Treatment

Preparation matters because heat and airflow need access to potential harbourages.

Preparing Rooms & Belongings

Is heat treatment a major upheaval?

There is preparation involved, but the treatment itself is relatively non-invasive. Our heating equipment remains outside and hot air enters the property through specialist ducting.

Good preparation makes treatment considerably easier and more effective. Therefore, we provide clear instructions before we arrive.

How should I prepare rooms for bed bug heat treatment?

Good preparation is essential. Rooms should be decluttered so heated air can circulate effectively and our technician can access beds, furniture, skirting boards and other potential harbourages.

Beds should be stripped, cupboards and wardrobes made accessible, and heat-sensitive items identified in our preparation instructions should be removed or protected.

Handle clothing and belongings carefully so that bed bugs are not accidentally moved into untreated areas.

How should I treat clothing if I have bed bugs?

Clothing needs careful handling because moving untreated items around the property can spread an infestation.

Where the fabric permits, laundering and tumble drying at suitable temperatures can help kill bed bugs. Always follow the garment manufacturer's care instructions.

Keep items awaiting treatment isolated in securely sealed bags or containers and separate them clearly from treated belongings.

Important: Do not simply move potentially infested belongings into another untreated room. Doing so can spread bed bugs around the property. Follow the preparation instructions provided by MothKill.

Items That May Need Removing or Protecting

What items need removing before heat treatment?

Heat-sensitive belongings may need removing or protecting before treatment.

🔥 Aerosols & Pressurised Items
💊 Medicines
🕯️ Candles & Wax
🎨 Artwork & Antiques
🌱 Plants & Pets
💿 Vinyl & Heat-Sensitive Items

Other examples include cosmetics, some electronics, certain plastics, laminated furniture and glued items.

We provide a more detailed preparation list before treatment.

🛡️

Safety & Your Property

What you need to know about high temperatures and household materials.

Property & Material Safety

Will heat treatment damage my belongings?

Most normal household furniture and materials tolerate professional heat treatment well. However, some belongings are heat-sensitive and need removing or protecting.

Examples can include medicines, aerosols, candles, cosmetics, certain electronics, pressurised containers, delicate artwork, vinyl records and some plastics.

Can heat treatment affect wallpaper?

It can. Heat may soften some wallpaper adhesives, particularly where wallpaper is old, already lifting or poorly applied.

Occasionally, this can cause bubbling, curling or lifting around the edges.

Can heat treatment damage paintwork?

Good-quality paintwork will normally tolerate treatment. However, old, damaged or poorly applied paint may occasionally bubble, crack or peel when exposed to elevated temperatures.

Please tell us about particularly delicate finishes before treatment.

Are UPVC windows and doors safe during heat treatment?

UPVC and associated components can be sensitive to excessive temperatures.

We monitor temperatures and take precautions around vulnerable windows, doors and fittings. Existing damage, age, material quality and direct exposure to hot airflow can all affect how materials respond.

Heating Equipment & Treatment Day

Can bed bug heat treatment cause a fire?

Our indirect diesel heater remains outside the property. Combustion gases exhaust outdoors, while clean heated air enters the treatment area through ducting.

There is no naked flame inside the property. We also monitor temperatures throughout treatment and provide instructions covering heat-sensitive and potentially hazardous items.

Are there diesel fumes inside the property?

No. We use indirect diesel heating equipment. The heater remains outside and combustion gases exhaust outdoors.

Clean heated air enters the property through suitable ducting.

Can I stay in the property during heat treatment?

No. People and pets should leave the treatment area while heat treatment takes place.

Temperatures become uncomfortable, and surfaces, ducting and other items can become very hot. We will advise you when you can safely return.

I'm worried about having heat treatment. Should I be?

It is understandable to have questions about heating a property to unusually high temperatures.

Professional heat treatment is a controlled process rather than simply making a property as hot as possible. We monitor temperatures throughout treatment and advise you beforehand about belongings that need removing or protecting.

Is my property suitable for bed bug heat treatment?

Most properties can potentially be treated, but access is important. We normally require suitable parking and a safe external location for our heating equipment.

Flats, upper floors and properties with difficult access need individual assessment. Please tell us what floor you are on and describe the access when requesting a quotation.

Why Bed Bug Treatments Sometimes Fail

Successful control depends on much more than simply applying heat or insecticide.

Bed Bugs Are Exceptionally Good at Hiding

Treatment problems often come down to access, preparation, harbourages, temperature distribution or reinfestation.

Hidden Harbourages Bed bugs can shelter deep inside furniture, cracks, bed frames and structural gaps.
Insulated Areas Heavy clutter and tightly packed belongings can slow heat penetration.
Untreated Areas Bed bugs elsewhere in a property can move back into treated rooms.
Poor Preparation Incorrect preparation can restrict airflow and may spread bed bugs.
Reintroduction Luggage, furniture and other belongings can introduce bed bugs again.
Insecticide Resistance Some bed bug populations have developed resistance to commonly used insecticides.

Treatment Failure & Follow-Up

Can bed bug heat treatment fail?

No pest treatment can responsibly be described as incapable of failure.

Heat treatment can be extremely effective, but success depends on factors including preparation, property layout, access, temperature distribution and whether bed bugs are present in untreated areas.

Heavy clutter and incorrectly stored belongings can also create insulated areas that are difficult for heat to penetrate.

What happens if the heat treatment doesn't work?

Bed bugs are extremely good at hiding. Correct preparation and access to affected areas are therefore important.

If you believe bed bug activity remains after treatment, contact us so we can assess the situation and advise on the appropriate next step.

Qualifying complete-property treatments include MothKill's 6-month warranty, subject to our treatment terms and preparation requirements.

Why are bed bugs so difficult to kill?

Bed bugs are exceptionally good at hiding. Their flattened bodies allow them to shelter in mattress seams, bed frames, furniture joints, skirting boards, cracks and other tiny spaces.

They can also survive for considerable periods without feeding. In addition, some bed bug populations have developed resistance to commonly used insecticides, which can make poorly planned chemical treatments less effective.

Bed Bug Questions & Prevention

Identification, DIY treatment, travel, furniture and how bed bugs spread.

Treatment & DIY Control

Are bed bugs a health risk?

Bed bug bites can cause itching, irritation and disturbed sleep. Reactions vary considerably between people. Some develop obvious marks, while others show little or no visible reaction.

Bed bugs are not generally considered established vectors of human disease. Nevertheless, an infestation can cause considerable distress and loss of sleep.

What is the best way to treat bed bugs?

The most appropriate treatment depends on the property and the severity of the infestation.

Professional heat treatment has the advantage of targeting bed bugs at different life stages, including eggs, without relying solely on insecticides.

Some situations can also benefit from an integrated approach combining heat with monitoring, physical controls and carefully selected professional pest-control products.

Do DIY bed bug treatments work?

DIY measures can sometimes help with very small or newly discovered infestations. However, established bed bug problems can be extremely difficult to eliminate without professional treatment.

One of the biggest problems is reaching every harbourage and every life stage. Repeated use of inappropriate insecticides or foggers can also complicate an infestation rather than solve it.

What can I do to help control a bed bug infestation?

Reduce clutter, vacuum regularly and make beds and surrounding areas easy to inspect. Avoid storing belongings underneath the bed where possible.

Do not move potentially infested furniture, bedding or clothing into unaffected rooms because this can spread the infestation.

Bed bug interceptors can also be useful for monitoring activity around beds.

Travel, Furniture & How Bed Bugs Spread

Can I pick up bed bugs from hotels?

Yes. Hotels and other accommodation are places where bed bugs can be accidentally picked up because they can hide in luggage and belongings.

When travelling, avoid placing your suitcase directly on or underneath the bed. A luggage stand can help. Inspect luggage when returning home and deal promptly with anything suspicious.

Can second-hand furniture bring bed bugs into my home?

Yes. Used beds, sofas, chairs and other upholstered furniture can potentially contain bed bugs or eggs.

Be particularly cautious with second-hand mattresses and upholstered furniture of unknown history. Inspect used furniture carefully before bringing it into your home.

How do bed bugs spread?

Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. They can travel in luggage, clothing, furniture and other belongings.

Once introduced into a property, they can spread between rooms and, in some circumstances, between adjoining properties.

Does having bed bugs mean my home is dirty?

No. Bed bugs are not attracted by dirt. They are attracted primarily to people because they need blood meals to survive.

Bed bugs can infest exceptionally clean homes as well as cluttered ones. However, reducing clutter makes them easier to detect and gives them fewer places to hide.

After Bed Bug Heat Treatment

What if a bed bug survives the heat treatment?

Our objective is to achieve lethal temperatures throughout the treatment area, but bed bugs can hide in extremely difficult locations.

Monitoring after treatment is therefore sensible. Depending on the treatment plan, we may also recommend additional measures such as silica-based dust, targeted professional insecticide treatment or bed bug interceptors.

Will I need more than one bed bug heat treatment?

A properly performed heat treatment can achieve very high levels of control in a single visit. In many cases, one heat treatment may be sufficient.

However, every infestation and property is different. Follow-up monitoring remains important, and additional treatment may occasionally be required where bed bugs survive in inaccessible locations or are reintroduced afterwards.

What are “zombie bed bugs”?

“Zombie bed bug” is not a recognised scientific pest-control term. People sometimes use it informally online to describe a bed bug that appears slow, disorientated or affected following treatment.

Do not automatically assume that a moving bed bug is harmless or incapable of reproducing. If you see live bed bugs following treatment, let us know so we can assess the situation properly.

Can bed bugs hide under floorboards?

Yes. Bed bugs can enter gaps around bare floorboards, skirting boards, pipework and other structural openings.

Enclosed voids may heat differently from the main room. This is one reason we use multiple temperature sensors and carefully monitor heat distribution during treatment.

Can bed bugs come back after heat treatment?

Yes. Even a successful treatment cannot prevent a completely new introduction.

Bed bugs can return through luggage, visitors, second-hand furniture and other belongings. In flats and multi-occupancy buildings, movement from another infested area can sometimes occur as well.

If you notice suspicious activity after treatment, contact us rather than immediately applying DIY chemicals.
